Logic and Arizona

Logic - the study of formally valid arguments.  Arguments consist of several sentences that are premises, or assumptions, and a sentence that staes a conclusion.  Logical arguements usually have the following format:

1. P
2. If P, then Q
3. Therefore Q

Most people think that Arizona was in the right for making anti-undocumented alien laws.  While I believe that the true blame of the program lies with the system, the quick and hasty decisions will only serve to make things worse.

1.  Undocumented aliens are in Arizona
2.  Undocumented aliens should be deported
3. Arizona will solve all its problems

Number 3 can be disporoved by understanding that
A) many times, undocs have kids that are american citizens, so this action would forcibly break families apart
B) Companies that hire undoc have not been punished or reprimanded for their illegal actions.
C) All monies earned by illigal aliens working with false documents get taxed, and this tax money is never refunded.  What happens to those unfiled tax dollars?
D) While the law is the law, an extreme proposition law is not the answer.

In a state with massive debt, this type of understaking will wind up costing millions in legal fees, logictics, and bad publicity.  AZ is also the home state to John McCain, and he was a co-sponsor of the DREAM act.  the Act laid out a good plans for allowing young men and women, brought to the USA as kids by parents, to earn citizenship.   Millitary Service, Community Service hours, and College Enrollment all would enable people to have early citizenship, as long as they contributed to the society they want to live in.  Take a look around and see if everyone you live by, drive past, or meet can say they are contributing positively, instead of being a drain on the country.

That being said,   I just signed a pledge to boycott Arizona until its new radical and unjust immigration legislation is repealed, reversed by the courts, and/or superseded by comprehensive federal immigration. Will you join me in signing the pledge?

I’m sure you have heard the uproar over Arizona’s new immigration legislation, SB 1070. Have you been wondering what you can do to voice your disgust with this law, which essentially condones racial profiling as accepted police practice?

Well, here’s your opportunity!

This morning, NCLR joined with the Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), the National Action Network (NAN), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the National Puerto Rican Coalition (NPRC), and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) to announce a boycott against the state of Arizona in protest of SB 1070.

Now that we’ve made a public stand to protest this unjust law, we ask that you make a personal pledge to boycott intolerance with us.

So I’m sure you are wondering what this all means. Here’s the breakdown:

First, join us in asking Major League Baseball to remove its All-Star Game from Arizona. A significant portion of the players in the game would be at risk of being profiled once they are off the field and out of uniform—moving the game seems more than reasonable, wouldn’t you say?

In addition, by signing the pledge, we commit to carefully considering whether the dollars we spend as consumers of goods and services could end up supporting, directly or indirectly, the perpetuation of this unjust law. If you represent an organization, we ask that you refrain from holding any conventions, conferences, special events, or major meetings involving significant travel to Arizona from out of state, while this law is in force.

We understand that this is not an action to be taken lightly. However, it is clear that the negative impact from the systemic profiling and discrimination that will occur as a result of this unjust law far outweighs the short-term inconveniences of this campaign. So we commit to continuing the boycott until SB 1070 is repealed, reversed by the courts, or superseded by comprehensive federal immigration reform.

Will you and/or your organization stand with us and pledge to boycott Arizona until SB 1070 is repealed?

Americans are rightfully and legitimately concerned with the broken state of our immigration system. But for Arizona to enact an unconstitutional law that invites racial profiling and ethnic discrimination against entire communities is not the right way to move forward. Instead, Congress must take the lead and fulfill its responsibility to fix the broken immigration system before other states follow Arizona’s misguided example.

Sincerely,

The Raving Lunatic
Grass Roots Organizer

We hope you stand with us against this fundamentally un-American law and join us, united in this effort to protect the civil rights of all Americans by boycotting intolerance. http://action.nclr.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1754
