A cell phone-using driver plowed into an Illinois State Patrol trooper Saturday night on the Dan Ryan Expy, apparently ignoring warnings from her passenger that she was getting too close to the trooper, a Cook County judge heard today. Kimisha M. Moore's passenger went so far as to turn the steering wheel to the left to avoid the trooper, but Moore then jerked the wheel back to the right, causing the car to plow into the trooper, Cook County assistant state's attorney Kevin DeBoni said in court today.
Kimisha M. Moore was on her cell phone and not paying attention when she struck an Illinois State Patrol trooper, prosecutors allege. Cook County Judge Jackie Portman set bond at $50,000 today for Moore, who is charged with aggravated reckless conduct, a felony. The trooper, who suffered a broken pelvis and two broken legs, remained in intensive care this afternoon and faces the possibility of further surgeries, said State Patrol Master Sgt. S. Nowak.
The trooper was struck shortly after 9 p.m., while standing on the right shoulder of northbound Dan Ryan near 63rd Street, investigators said. At the time, the trooper was handling an unrelated traffic stop, investigators said. Moore's passenger alerted her that other drivers were switching to the left lanes to avoid the trooper on the shoulder, DeBoni said. But Moore, 19, was using her cell phone and not paying attention, DeBoni said. Moore has admitted that she was using her cell phone at the time of the crash and estimated she was travelling about 60 mph, DeBoni said.
